Description

William Anthony Ivan Pinson was appointed War Substantive Lieutenant with the South Staffordshire Regiment on 13 Oct 1940 and Temporary Captain on the same date.

Pinson was tasked with 'escorting to the U.K. a case of official Jap War Trophies…As this case cannot be despatched with the Heavy baggage and will have to be taken on board personally by this Officer, could he be embarked prior to the General Embarkation.'

A further letter from Brigadier R.I. Jones, O.B.E. details that 'a Japanese Officer's sword has been set aside for you, in accordance with the wishes of General Sir Montagu Stopford before he left his command'.
