1850 pattern Infantry officer's sword with brass hilt, pommel and knucklebrow, with shagreen and hide grip, decoratively etched blade stamped 'U.S' to ricasso and 'Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee MAS.', U.S. and pluribus unum, with brass mounted leather scabbard, locket stamped AMES MFG & Co Chicopee, Mas., attributed to Captain James Fackenthall, E Company 12th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry (41. Pa Vols)accompanied by his copy of the US Infantry Tactics for the Instruction, Exercise and Manoeuvres of the United States Infantry 1863, annotated to front cover: 'Lieut. J. E. Frackenthall, E. Description

James E. Fackenthall enlisted at Easton, Pennsylvania as a Private in "E" Company, 12th Reserve Regiment and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in March 1862, appointed First Lieutenant on 1 May 1863 and Captain on 13 March 1865.

Fackenthall was posted to Doylestown as a recruiting officer in 1862 and served at Gettysburg, Drainsville and throughout the Peninsular Campaign and was mustered out of service at the conclusion of the Civil War on 11 June 1864.
