Peter Judge was serving with Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead's "B" Company of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot at the famous defence of the Mission Station at Rorke's Drift on 22 Jan 1879.
Private Peter Judge is confirmed as being present on Lieutenant Chard's roll as number 65 of 141 total men present, present on Colour Sergeant Bourne's roll and Lt. Col. Dunbar's List of 'Men of the 2nd Battalion Who Received a Copy of the Address by the Mayor of Durban having taken part in the defence of Rorke's Drift Post on 22 Jan 1879, now serving with the Battalion'.
Peter Judge attested with the 24th Foot in 1872 (untraced but believed late 1872) and was posted to the 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot in January 1873. The following year, Judge was awarded a regimental good shooting prize. After serving during the Kaffir War of 1878 and the Zulu War of 1879, culminating in the defence of Rorke's Drift, Judge sent a monthly remittance of £1 to Mrs Judge, continuing to serve with the South Wales Borderers at 1 July 1881 and was subsequently discharged to the Volunteer Cape Infantry on 12 May 1882.
Judge was finally listed as returning to England from India on 29 Jan 1883.
