Description

Charles Jones was born in Pencombe, near Leominster, Herefordshire on 6 Apr 1876, the son of Burghope Inn inkeeper Benjamin Jones.

Jones enlisted with the Shropshire Yeomanry on 1 Apr 1908, promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 10 May 1909, embodied with "C" Squadron at Ludlow on 5 Aug 1914, disembarking at Alexandria on 15 Mar 1916, joining the 10th Battalion, K.S.L.I. on 16 Dec 1916, joining the 1st Infantry Base Depot at Kantara on 6 May 1918, then embraking for France on 25 May 1918, arriving in Rouen on 5 June 1918, returning to the UK on 3 Dec 1918 to join the K.S.L.I. Depot and then posted to the 4th Battalion on 1 Jan 1919, discharged at Bush Camp, Pembroke Dock on 23 Jan 1919. Jones continued service with the Shropshire Yeomanry into 1930, receiving the clasp to his Territorial Force Long Service Medal from Chaplain Reverend W. Pugh during the Annual Yeomanry Camp at Porthcawl in 1929.

A noted marksman, Jones won the Regimental Challenge Cup in 1923, 1924 and 1928, winning three out of four shooting challenge cups in the latter competition, breaking the record score in the process.

He went on to win the Surgn. Col. Lloyd Cup in 1927 and 1928.
