William Bachelor was born in Crawley, Sussex in 1820 and attested with the 8th Regiment of Foot on 11 Dec 1838, promoted to Corporal on 30 Mar 1855 and Sergeant on 10 Sep 1857, serving in the East Indies for 12 years and 212 days and 24 years as Staff Sergeant on the Permanent Staff of 3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment.
