John Rolt was born in Outwell, Cambridgeshire in 1882, the son of George Rolt of Birthorpe, nr. Folkingham, attesting with the Lincolnshire Regiment on 25 Sep 1900, aged 18 years, and posted to South Africa on 15 Apr 1902, serving there until 15 Nov 1902.
