James Luke Scott was born in Durham in 1863, the son of Thomas Scott of Pelton Hall, Chester-le-Street, and attested with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 12 Apr 1882.

Posted to India on 21 Feb 1885 on "Serapis", Scott served with the 2nd Battalion until 7 Feb 1890 and discharged on 11 Apr 1894.
