Description

Charles Edwin Henry was born in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire in 1880, the son of Gavin and Eliza Henry of 39 Murray St., Llanelli and worked as a draper, marrying Sarah Henry (nee Lewis), the couple lived at 16 Als Street, Llanelli in 1882 before Henry served with the 1st Volunteer Battalion Welsh Regiment.

He attested with the Welsh Regiment on 23 Feb 1900 and was posted to South Africa with the 2nd Volunteer Service Company, Welsh Regiment on 25 Feb 1901.

On the outbreak of WWI, Henry was serving as Company Quarter Master Sergeant with the 1/4th T.F. Battalion, Welsh Regiment, landing at Cape Helles, Gallipoli on 7 Aug 1915.

Immediately thrown into action, the Battalion fought over the next few days in isolated pockets, before enduring a fierce Turkish counter-attack at the Battle of Sari Bair.

Henry was killed in this offensive on 10 Aug 1915, aged 32, and is remembered on the Helles Memorial.
