Description

Eric Norman Laurence Guymer was born on 25 Nov 1909 in Southsea, Hampshire and learned to fly at the Hampshire Aero Club and awarded his Aero Certificate numbered 11941 on 5th June 1934. He joined class 'F' of the R.A.F. Reserve in 1936 as an airmen u/t pilot. He was called to full time service on 1st Sep 1939 and served with 12 Squadron at Thorney Island on 17 Aug 1940. On this day he flew his only operational sortie with the squadron; a daylight attack on shipping in Boulogne harbour, in Fairey Battles.

Guymer joined 238 Squadron at St Eval on 7 Sep 1940. He was attached to 5 O.T.U from 14 Sep, converted to Hurricanes and rejoined 238 Squadron at Chilbolton on 9 October until March 1941. Guymer was commissioned in Jan 1942 and released from the R.A.F. in 1945 as a Flight Lieutenant. He died in Portsmouth in April 1994.
