James Parker was born in Little Canfield, Dunmow, Essex and attested with the Bedfordshire Regiment on 16 Nov 1899, posted to South Africa on 11 June 1900, imprisoned on 5 separate occassions for obscene language, refusing punishment in an insolent manner, leaving his post without orders, drunkeness and creating a disturbance, entitled to the Queen's and King's South Africa Medal.
Re-enlisting on 4 Dec 1911, Parker served in France from 12 Sep 1914 to 22 Apr 1915, after suffering a gun shot wound to the back the previous day.
