Description

Arthur McDougall born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire on 22 Jan 1896, the son of Arthur and Amelia McDougall of 32 Bunkers Hill Lane, Bilston, Staffordshire and lived in Wolverhampton.

Joining the Royal Navy on 27 Aug 1915, McDougall joined the crew of H.M.S. Hyacinth on 6 Nov 1915, a ship that served on the Cape and East Africa station during WWI, persuing the S.S. Rubens and sinking the S.S Tabora.

The ship's log of the evening of 20 Sep 1916 recorded the following:

9:10pm: Ordinary Seaman McDougall fell overboard from steam cutter. Lowered life boats and dropped buoys. Lt. Palmer and Mid. Murray went overboard to assist. Burnt searchlights.

9:20pm: Lowered 2nd life boat.

10:20pm: Cutter returned with both officers. O.S. McDougall lost. Search abandoned. McDougall died from drowning at Zanzibar on 20 Sep 1916 and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial and Bilston Memorial.
