Description

Trooper Henry E. Haynes was awarded the Territorial Efficiency Medal with an Army Order of 1 July 1911. The following is from the family of the recipient:

"Son of a wealthy factory owner, Henry attended Haberdasher Aske's School in New Cross. His mother died young and his stepmother left the estate to her children and cut the children from her previous marriage out of her will. Dad, my stepfather, was born in 1911 and did not discuss his father much with me, other than to tell me that his father was involved in the cavalry and worked as a civil servant in the War Office. In Nov 1944, a V1 flying bomb landed on Woolworths, New Cross, causing one of the biggest death tolls in WWII. Henry's remains were identified by his pocket watch and he is buried in a mass grave in Ladywell."

Henry Haynes is recorded as being killed by a V2 Flying Bomb on 25 Nov 1944 at 12:36 and buried at Islington, London.
