Description

Thomas Cornish served with the 2nd Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in Waziristan from 4 Mar 1937 and was serving with 6 Section, 8 Platoon, A Company in Nov 1938. Cornish was posted to Malaya during WWII, fought in the defence of Singapore, recorded as 'missing' two days before the fall of Singapore on 13 Jan 1942. Don Wall's "Kill the Prisoners" records Cornish as dying in Kuching Prisoner of War Camp on 25 July 1945, having contracted malaria, aged 31 years, and is buried at Plot P, Row C, Grave 11 at Brunei Bay, Labuan War Cemetery. Less than 7 weeks later, the Japanese forces in the area under Maj. Gen. Yamamura surrendered in the presence of Brig. Gen. Eastick on board HMAS Kapunda on 9 Sep 1945.
