Description

George A. Heard was born on 25 Sep 1873 and lived at 11 Furzehill; Road, Mutley, Plymouth, Devon and 52 Torrington Place, North Road, Plymouth and also Albaston, Gunnislake with his wife, Bessie, and son, Arthur Henry Heard.

He served as a Chief Stoker with the Royal Navy during WWI, entitled to the 1914-15 Star trio of medals and wsa awarded his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal whilst serving at H.M.S. Sapphire II.

His son, Arthur Henry Heard was serving with the 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment during May 1940 when the Battalion was effectively destroyed at Abbeville. Of 581 men, only 70 survived and were taken into captivity. Arthur was one of these men, pronounced 'Missing' on 20 May 1940.

The following is taken from a newspaper article with Arthur's image in uniform:

"Mr and Mrs G.A. Heard of 11 Furzehill Road, Mutley, Plymouth, have been informed that their son, Pte. A.H. Heard, who had been reported missing, is a prisoner of war at Stalag, Germany. Pte. Heard, who is 22 years of age, had been in the employ of Plymouth Corporation Transport."

Arthur was given a repatriation celebration and fundraising at Lower Albaston Sunday School in 1943, detailed in another newspaper cutting, after 3 and a half years in captivity.
