Manley served as a Drummer with the 24th Foot, arriving in South Africa in Feb 1878 with the 2nd Battalion and posted to the 2nd Mounted Infantry detachment under Lieut. W. Sugden from 4 Nov 1878 to 12 Sep 1879.
