WATERLOO MEDAL TO HUGH M'CARTNEY, 6TH OR INNISKILLING DRAG. (WOUNDED AT WATERLOO)

Hugh McCartney was born in Dromore, Garvaghy, County Down on 23 Mar 1782 and enlisted with the Inniskilling Dragoons on 23 Mar 1799.

At the Battle of Waterloo McCartney served in Captain William Brown's Troop. During the famous charge of the Union Brigade, the Inniskillings reached Napoleon's Grand Battery, but were counter-attacked by Jacquinots Lancers. It was here that McCartney was wounded by a lance to the left leg and a musket ball to the left arm. After the battle, McCartney spent 28 days in hospital in Brussels, discharged on 7 June 1820 due to chronic rheumatism and dying on 18 Aug 1846.
