Charles Edward Hale Helps worked with his brother, Stewart Helps, at the National Mutual Buildings, Durban and first served with Hutton's Scouts, further entitled to the British South Africa Company's Medal and during the Boer War with Rimington's Guides from 15 Oct 1899, Damant's Horse and finally the 1st Scottish Horse from 23 July 1901 to 22 Jan 1902.

Entitled to all 8 clasps, Helps was discharged time expired on 25 Jan 1902.
