John Trustman was born in St. Mary's, Newton Heath, Lancashire and worked as a labourer , living at 12 Queens Street, Failsworth, Manchester before enlisting with the Manchester Regiment at Ashton-under-Lyne on 16 Nov 1897, first serving in Gibraltar from 12 Mar 1898 to 22 Aug 1899 before being posted to South Africa on 23 Aug 1899, serving at the Defence of Ladysmith, Elandslaagte and Belfast until 6 Jan 1902.
Trustman was declared 'Insane' and discharged as medically unfit for further service on 25 Feb 1902.
