Daniel Addis was born at St Pancreas, London, in 1825. He had previously served as a Sergeant (No. 1739) in the 58th Foot.

He served with the 1st Waikato Militia at Opotiki and Te Akeaki, 4 February 1867, during the Tauranga campaign.
