Description

George Child Johnson entered the Royal Navy as Landsman on 28 June 1798 and joined the crew of H.M.S. Northumberland under Captain George Martin, under whom he witnessed the capture of the 74-gun ship Le Genereux on 18 Feb 1800.

Johnson served at the blockade and surrender of Malta and was aboard Northumberland during the expedition to Egypt in 1801. Appointed Midshipman and Master's Mate of H.M.S. Agincourt, Johnson joined H.M.S. Mediator, Dolphin and Northumberland, flagships in the West Indies of Sir Alex Cochrane and bomb-vessel H.M.S. Aetna, under Captain William Godfrey, promoted Acting Lieutenant and serving under Lord Gambier at the bombardment of Copenhagen and destruction of the shipping at Basque Roads.

Leaving Aetna in June 1809, Johnson was employed on the Mediterranean and Home stations aboard H.M.S. Ajax, Raven, Bristol, Echo, Christian VII, Salvador Del Mundo and Niobe.

Johnson retired with the rank of Commander on 9 Apr 1847.
