Lieut. J.F.J. Stevenson served as an officer with the 26th Regiment Native Infantry and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, becoming the Commissioner for Arakan.

Stevenson died on 7 Dec 1873 aboard the steamer "Bushur" on route to Calcutta from Akyab. He was aged 50 years old.
