James Hall was born in St. Giles, Edinburgh, Scotland in 1866, the son of Elizabeth Hall of 24 West Richmond Street, Edinburgh and attested with the Seaforth Highlanders on 10 July 1884 and posted to India on 30 Oct 1885, serving at Hazara until returning home on 28 Jan 1892 and discharged on 6 July 1896.
