John Arkless was born in Gateshead, Newcastle in 1867, the son of Barbara Arkless of 11 Bensham Terrace, Gateshead and attested with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 15 Apr 1885, posted to India with the 2nd Battalion from 24 Sep 1886 to 27 Mar 1893 for the Hazara Expedition.
