Francis de Sausmarez Shortt was born in Guernsey in 1863, the son of Vice Admiral Francis Henry Shortt.
During the Egypt campaign, Shortt served with the Black Watch and was attached to Wolseley's river column, participating in the Battle of Kirbekan. Commissioned Lieutenant on 27 Nov 1896, Shortt was promoted to Captain on 12 Nov 1896 with the Royal Scots Fusiliers, serving under General Sir William Lockhart on the Northwest Frontier of India with the Tirah Expeditionary Force.
Shortt was severely wounded at the action in the Bara Valley, with his wounding Gazetted on 5 Apr 1898 as 'dangerous, gunshot, abdomen'.
During the Boer War Shortt served as Assistant Provost Marshall of Johannesburg from Dec 1900 to 15 Sep 1902, finally promoted to Major on 4 Feb 1905 before retirement
