Description

Frederick Hodgson was born in April 1856 in London under his mother's name of Harris, reverting to his father's name on enlistment 4 Oct 1876.

Aged 20 years and 6 months, and a Labourer by trade, Hodgson enlisted with the 24th Foot at Brecon and was promoted to Lance Corporal during the Zulu war and then Sergeant and Colour Sergeant on his re-enlistment with the South Wales Borderers, serving in the Third Burma War. His son, Frederick James Hodgson, also enlisted with the 2nd Battalion The South Wales Borderers.
