The following is an extract from the regimental diaries entitled ‘LANDING IN ABYSSINIA’:

“By the 26th of January the commander-in-chief considered matters sufficiently pushed forward to justify the commencement of an advance on Antalo; accordingly, orders were sent to hurry on the embarkation of the remainder of the force. On the 16th of January, 1868, the regiment, which had been armed with the Snider rifle in the previous November, embarked at Bombay on board the ships " Canova," " Gavin Steel," and " America," the following officers sailing with the expedition ; — Colonel Parish in command…Captain de Thoren had gone to Abyssinia with the advanced brigade, and was there acting as D.A.Q.M,G.”

After the Abyssinia Campaign, De Thoren was appointed Professor of Military History at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.
