Edward William Collins was born in Battersea on 25 May 1891 and worked as a silver smith before attesting with the Royal Artillery on 29 May 1891, aged 18 years, posted to South Africa on 24 Oct 1899 with "R" Battery, Royal Horse Artillery until 6 Sep 1902 and discharged on 17 Aug 1911 after 18 years of service.
