Hamilton R. Boyle was born in London on 3 Feb 1849 and commissioned Ensign with the 23rd Foot by purchase on 30 Sep 1868. Promoted Lieutenant on 1 Nov 1871, Boyle was posted to fight in the Ashanti campaign from 21 Nov 1873 to 25 Mar 1874, his medal issued to him at Aldershot.
