"During the attack on Point 181 on 5 May 1943, this N.C.O. showed outstanding power of leadership. On night 5/6 May, Sjt. Smith's platoon was attacked three times, during which his platoon was cut off from the remainder of his Company. He showed the greatest determination and coolness in resisting all efforts of the enemy to capture his position and set a fine example of devotion to all ranks of his platoon."
The Liverpool Daily Post of 24 Sep 1943 records Staff Sergeant Thomas Smith (St. Helens) award 'for gallant and distinguished services in North Africa'.
