Distinguished Conduct Medal Gazetted 11 Mar 1920:

"For conspicuous devotion to duty and gallant conduct during the recent advance, and particularly at the Canal du Nord on 18th September 1918, when in charge of a platoon. The platoon came under heavy shell fire and suffered severe casualties. Though wounded, he personally supervised the collection of the wounded, and it was owing to his coolness and skilful handling of his men that the relief was properly completed."

William Roberts was born in Brownhills, Stafford, the son of John Roberts of Newtown, Brownhills and and attested on 9 Nov 1914, entering France with the Welsh Guards on 17 Aug 1915, promoted to Lance Corporal on 18 Dec 1915 and Lance Sergeant on 15 Aug 1918 and is recorded as suffering a bayonet wound to the right foot on 23 Sep 1916 before his wounding in the action when he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
