George Powell was born in Aston Ingham, nr. Ross, Herefordshire and enlisted with the Shropshire Light Infantry in Shrewsbury on 1 Feb 1889, promoted to Corporal on 30 May 1891, Sergeant 1 May 1895 and serving as Colour Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry, posted to South Africa on 7 Nov 1899 to 6 Jan 1903, afterwards serving in India and awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on 1 July 1907.

Powell was discharged on 28 Jan 1910.
