Distinguished Conduct Medal Gazetted 27 Sep 1901:

"For Distinguished Conduct in the Field in recognition of their services during the operations in South Africa, 29 November 1900."

George Powell was born in Aston Ingham, nr. Ross, Herefordshire and enlisted with the Shropshire Light Infantry in Shrewsbury on 1 Feb 1889, promoted to Corporal on 30 May 1891, Sergeant 1 May 1895 and serving as Colour Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry, posted to South Africa on 7 Nov 1899 to 6 Jan 1903, afterwards serving in India and awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on 1 July 1907.

Powell was discharged on 28 Jan 1910.
