Thomas McLeod was born on 12 Aug 1862, the son of Findlay McLeod and Elizabeth Dingwall of Evanton, Ross & Cromerty, Scotland. Entering Royal Service on 1 July 1890, McLeod became Footman to the Master of the Horse, and Footman in the Royal Mews on 25 Jan 1892, promoted to Yeoman State Porter on 1 Jan 1910, retiring on pension on 12 Aug 1932.
McLeod's wife, Clara Pickard, whom he had married at the Royal Mews on 9 Mar 1892, died in 1898 and their son, Thomas Colin McLeod, was placed in the Brighton Home for Orphan Boys with maintenance provided by Queen Victoria. Thomas Colin McLeod followed his father as a Royal Footman in 1914, but was killed in action whilst serving with the Norfolk Regiment in 1916.
