Alfred Frank Tuxworth was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire on 27 Sep 1894, the son of Alfred and Rebecca Tuxworth, a member of the United Ancient Order of the Druids Joseph Heuson Lodge and working as a shunter on the Great Central Railway. Serving with the 1/10th (County of London) Battalion (Hackney), London Regiment from 1 June 1915, Tuxworth transferred to the Royal Engineers, admitted to the Scottish Horse Field Ambulance with malaria.
