John Harold Wortley was born in Thornton Heath, Surrey on 17 Aug 1892 and enlisted with the 5th (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade), T.F. on 3 Nov 1910, entering France on 4 Nov 1914, invalided home on 12 Dec 1917, serving at home until discharge on 13 June 1918 due to wounds and declared no longer physically fit for service, then listed as serving from home subsequently from 9 Nov 1922 to 4 June 1929.
