Philip Arthur Percival Webberley was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire on 7 June 1900 and lied about his age to enlist, first serving as a Bugler on 12 Aug 1914, entering France on 21 Feb 1915. His Medal Index Card records Webberley with his correct initials and also with the initial 'G', linking the two cards together. Still in the ranks from 1914 to 1931, Webberley was then appointed W.O.II and W.O.I in 1935, commissioned Lieutenant Quartermaster on 9 Sep 1939, invalided from the B.E.F. in France in 1939 and transferred to 14th General Hospital.
