Thomas Nicholson Chapman served aboard paddle minesweeper H.M.S. Halcyon from 12 Feb 1917 and destroyer H.M.S. Pytchley from 30 June 1917.

Chapman would have been serving as Temporary Sub Lieutenant on Halcyon on 19 Feb 1917, when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-71 (Hugo Schmidt), off the Butt of Lewis.

11 crew members were lost.
