Eric Drummond Smith was born in 1898, the son of Henry Walter and Frances Sarah Smith, of Hill Mount, Pleasley, Mansfield.
Educated at Margate and Nottingham High School, Smith was commissioned from the O.T.C. in Sep 1916 and entered France on 4 Oct 1916.
Serving with the 9th Battalion, Notts. & Derby. Regiment, Smith was attached to the 6th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment when he was Killed In Action exactly a year later, on 4 Oct 1917, aged 19 years.
He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial. A memorial service was held in the Pleasley Parish Church.
