John Cunningham was born in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland and attested for the 17th Lancers at Halifax, Yorkshire on 3 Mar 1855, serving in Crimea and Turkey and East Indies, entitled to the Indian Mutiny Medal and discharged from service at Dublin on 4 Mar 1876 after 21 years and 3 days service.
