Description

Harry James Dowland was born in Pokesdown, Dorset in 1882 and joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class on 15 Oct 1897, serving aboard H.M.S. Minotaur, Agincourt, Australia, Volage, Juno, Trafalgar, Royal Sovereign, Duke of Wellington, Vernon and Excellent before joining the crew of H.M.S. Formidable on 1 Oct 1904 and H.M.S. Diadem on 12 Apr 1907.

Dowland was serving aboard H.M.S. Europa from 1 Aug 1914, entering the Gallipoli theatre on 13 July 1915 aboard H.M.S. Blenheim.

After WWI, Dowland served as Coastguard Station Officer at Southbourne, Bournemouth.
