Description

Military Cross Gazetted 13 May 1918: "He took command of a raiding party after the officer in command had been killed early in the operation. He led his men to the final objective with great dash and determination, under heavy fire, and carried out the withdrawal in a most skilful manner. He showed splendid leadership and courage".

Tom Heap was born in Chesterfield and lived at St. Barnabas House, New Whittington, nr. Chesterfield, first serving as a Lance Sergeant with the Notts. & Derby. Regiment entering France on 18 Sep 1917 and commissioned Temporary 2nd Lieutenant with the 15th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment and latterly attached to the Royal Air Force.
