William Thomson lived at Whitehouse, Tarbert, Argyll and Bute and enlisted with the Scottish Horse on 24 Mar 1911. He was invalided from Gallipoli, suffering from Enteric Fever and transferred to the the Royal Army Service Corps as a Motor Driver at Hartley Witney, Hampshire on 7 Feb 1917. However, he was discharged physically unfit on 1 June 1917 after a medical board found 'he should not have re-enlisted with disabilities a result of former service in Gallipoli'.
This 1914-15 Star is the only WWI medal with the rank 'Piper' to the Scottish Horse.
