Kenneth Ross Fulton Black was born in North Berwick, Scotland in 1905, the son of Henry Somers and Jane Greig Black and lived at 32 Park Avenue, Bedford with his brother, Henry Lindsay Black. He was commissioned Lieutenant with the Manchester Regiment on 31 Aug 1931, promoted to Captain with the 2nd Battalion on 2 Apr 1938, Temporary Major on 23 Feb 1941 and 'specially employed' as General Staff Officer 2nd Grade and Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel on 23 May 1942.
