Description

James Hill McTavish was born in Bicester, Bucks on 31 May 1912 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment on 2 Nov 1940. The 4th Battalion, East Yorks suffered heavy losses on 28 Mar 1942 a fortnight before the start of the Battle of Gazala, after a gallant defence. Lieutenant McTavish, along with 30 fellow officers, was made Prisoner of War and imprisoned at Oflag 79 at Waggum, near Brunswick.
