Military Medal Gazetted 14 Dec 1916 M.I.D. Gazetted 15 June 1916.

Harold Shackleton was born in Saltaire, Yorkshire, the only son of Mr and Mrs Shackleton of Mount Tabor House, Halifax, employed at Calvert's at Wainstalls Mill.

Enlisting as a Private in the 1/4th West Riding Regiment, Territorial Force at the outbreak of WWI, Shackleton disembarked in France on 15 Apr 1915.

Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field, Shackleton returned to England to be commissioned with the Machine Gun Corps on 16 Nov 1916.

Transferring to the Tank Corps, Shackleton was Killed In Action in his tank on 26 Aug 1918.

Shackleton's mother received this letter from Lieutenant A.W. Russell:

"Dear Mrs Shackleton - It is with deep regret that I have to tell you that your son was killed in action yesterday morning. He was sitting inside the tank when a shell went through, killing him instantly. He was certainly one of the pluckiest fellows I know, and had been leading us fealessly for some time. The sympathy of the whole company is with you. He was loved by all of us for his cheerfulness and pluck."

Shackleton is buried at Windmill British Cemetery, Monchy-le-Preux.
