Henry Alexander Johnson was born in Seringapatam, India on 21 Nov 1873, the son of Samuel Morris and Laura Catherine Johnson and educated at Bedford Modern School. Johnson was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers from the Militia 3rd Battalion on 29 May 1895, promoted to Lieutenant on 13 Jan 1898 and transferring to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Inniskillings for the Tirah Expedition, awarded the India Medal with two clasps, promoted to the rank of Captain on 17 June 1901. Johnson joined the Army Service Corps before the Inniskillings were posted to South Africa, posted there himself on 21 Apr 1903 after the Boer War and appointed Commanding Officer of 39 Coy. in Manchester before a posting in Malta where he married his wife, Constance Bertha Shewell. Johnson then became Commanding Officer of 11th Company in London in 1908, seconded for service as Adjutant of 2nd Divisional Transport and Supply Column in 1911.

On the outbreak of WWI, Johnson wa posted to France with H.Q. Coy. 2nd Divisional Train, receiving his first of five Mentions in Despatches in Sir John French's Despatch of 14 Jan 1915. Returning to England, Johnson commanded 19th Divisional Train at Perham Down before being posted to France once more on 17 July 1915 as Lieutenant-Colonel, awarded the DS.O. in 1917 and M.I.D.d four further times and appointed Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 Jan 1918, appointed Officer Commanding the Royal Army Service Corps in Dover. Promoted to full Colonel on 23 Apr 1923, Johnson wa appointed Assistant Directior Supply and Transport on the Rhine at H.Q. B.O.A.R. at Cologne until retirement on 20 May 1925.
