The Drummond Castle Medal was presented on behalf of Queen Victoria by officials from the British Embassy in Paris to inhabitants of Brest, Ushant and Molene for their generosity and humanity in rescuing the survivors of the S.S. "Drummond Castle" which struck a reef off Ushant on 16 June 1896. Of the 143 passengers and 104 crew, there were just 3 survivors from the 243 passengers and crew, with 282 medals were awarded to those who saved the living and assisted in the recovery and burial of the victims.
