Description

"Lowered 60 feet to rescue dog - A Newcastle war reserve policeman, Mr Stephen Hurst, who had himself lowered nearly 50 feet by a rope down a quarry face to rescue a small collie dog, trapped on a ledge, was yesterday commended by the City Watch Committee for his courageous action. He risked a drop of 120 feet when he got two other policemen to lower him at the rope's end at a quarry in Haddrick's Mill Road. For his courage and humanity, the R.S.P.C.A. has awarded him its bronze medal and certificate."
