John Henry Farquhar was born in Silvington, Shropshire in 1880, the son of John Henry and Rose Farquhar, living at Silvington Rectory, Cleobury Mortimer, nr. Tenbury, Worcestershire before working as Assistant Commissioner of Forestry in the Colonial Office, Nigeria. Farquhar served at the Headquarters Nigeria Regiment as a Nigerian Civil Official from 19 Nov 1914 to 8 Sep 1917. The plant 'Farquharia', of the Apocynaceae family, is named after 'John Henry Joseph Farquhar (1879–1972), forester and plant collector in Nigeria.'
