Davies; WWI Victory Medal to Capt. V.C. Davies; Death Plaque to Valentine Clements Davies; Memorial Scroll to Capt. Valentine Clements Davies, M.C., Royal Field Artillery, 40 Bde. Accompanied by memorial medal transmission slip to Capt. V.C. Davies, two original photographs of recipient and letter from Davies' C.O. detailing the circumstances around his death: 'I am afraid I can get you few details about Davies' death. They had a very bad position - all of them, to get to - to observe for wire cutting before the attack on the 15th, and it was just an unlucky shell. He had got command of his battalion about 4 months ago & run it very well & will be very much missed.
Description

Included in another original letter: Captain Valentine Clements Davies was returning from his observation post in the trenches west of Montauban at around 2000 hrs on 10 July 1916, accompanied by one of his subalterns and a telephonist. They were in Mine Alley, a broad communication trench running parallel to the road. A shell landed in the trench just behind them and wounded all three. Capt. Davies was hit by a fragment in the back which pierced his lung. He was dressed within minutes and sent to the dressing station at Carnoy, where he died of wounds. Military Cross Gazetted 14 Jan 1916. Valentine Clements Davies was born 25 June 1886 in Alverstoke, Southampton, the son of Major Thomas Henry Davies, entering France 'prior to 22 Nov 1914 and appointed Aide de Camp to the Adjutant-General, 1st Echelon. Davies dies on 10 July 1916 and is buried at Dive Copse Cemetery.
