Description

George Knyvett Wilson entered the Royal Navy in July 1812 as Volunteer First Class aboard Minden and became Midshipman of the Bellerophon under Captain Edward Hawker and the Tonnant and Asia, stationed in the East Indies, North America and the Mediterranean until Feb 1816, present at the attack on New Orleans. Promoted 25 Mar 1824 and appointed Supernumerary-Lieutenant of the Hyperion as Coast Blockade and then the Talbot of Capt. Hon. Fred Spencer, fitting to the Mediterranean, where he remained until the close of 1828, participating in the Battle of Navarin, the capitulation of Patras and the reduction of Morea Castle. Latterly he commanded the Pilot in the East Indies from Oct 1845 to 1847 and then became Captain of Rodney in the Black Sea, bringing home troopes in 1856 from the Crimea. His son, Sir Arthur Kynvet Wilson, went on to become Admiral of the Fleet and won the Victoria Cross for hand-to-hand gallantry during the Egypt Campaign of the 1880s.
